Human System Intelligence (HSI) is the study of the human system as a whole and how human experience is organized and reorganized within it.
The nervous system is essential to being human, but it is not the whole of the human system.
HSI expands the field of inquiry beyond the nervous system to explore the larger organization of human experience—including the ways perception, thought, emotion, experience, behavior, relationship, structure, and function participate in that organization.
By looking beyond the nervous system alone, we gain a larger picture of what is occurring within the human system and a clearer understanding of ourselves.
From Nervous System to Human System
Nervous System Intelligence explores the regulation of the nervous system and its participation in the organization of human experience.
Human System Intelligence expands the inquiry beyond nervous system regulation to explore the larger organization of human experience.
Human System Intelligence asks a larger question:
What is occurring within the human system through which we experience and inhabit our lives?
The distinction matters.
The nervous system is a physiological system.
The Human System is the larger field through which the human being experiences, organizes, expresses, and inhabits life.
HSI does not replace Nervous System Intelligence.
It expands the lens.
The Carson Model
The Carson Model encompasses both Nervous System Intelligence and Human System Intelligence, along with other bodies of work as they emerge.
At its foundation is the Trinity—a structure within every one of us that organizes and reorganizes experience.
The Carson Model explores how these structures and functions participate in the organization and reorganization of human experience through Relationship and Order.
A Different Question
HSI invites us to shift the inquiry.
Instead of asking:
What is wrong with me?
or:
Is there something wrong with me?
we can begin asking:
How am I being organized?
and:
How is experience being organized within my system?
This shift opens the possibility of understanding ourselves without reducing the human experience to what is wrong, broken, or disordered.
An Emerging Field of Study
Human System Intelligence is an evolving field of inquiry.
Its language, principles, and applications will continue to develop as new recognitions emerge.
At the Teresea Carson Institute, HSI is studied alongside the other bodies of work within the Carson Model as we continue to explore what it means to be human.
